Poetry

Here is a selection of the poetry I have written over the last few years, please enjoy!

Stability

Why fear stability?

With stability comes security, safety, certainty

With stability comes stagnancy, stalling, immovability

When one is used to rocky waters and turbulent winds

The plain calm of ocean waves and clear blue skies

Become hard to trust

How can I trust the calm when every day I’ve confronted the storm?

Each day wading through stability

A disaster waiting to happen

Tragedy just around the corner

The calm waters in their stillness

Threaten to pull me under

The unfamiliar nature of calm feels unsafe

While the familiar embrace of instability

Holds me tight and keeps me warm

Comfort comes from constants

And stability is a fickle mistress

Waiting to flee and leave me in the cold

Reflection

Looking upon a reflective surface

Quizzically assessing what you see

There’s a face you recognize

But what lies behind it

You scarcely know

The eyes are blank and glassy

Hiding millions of thoughts

Of nothing

What you manage to glimpse

You lose in a second

The face is both known

And unknown

You trace the familiar curves of its features

And question the depths of its thoughts

What lies behind the mask you behold?

The face stares back

Looks on in similar scrutiny

What it sees you do not know

It judges you

Attempts to probe below your surface

The longer you look the more unsure you feel

Who is this?

You pass the time searching and searching

Looking for answers

Waiting for epiphany

As time passes

The face grows more blank

Whatever it thinks

You cannot access

A flash of recognition in its eyes

You turn your heel and walk away

Dissociate

Stillness, double vision

The all too familiar zone out

Absence of thought

So frequently sought

Yet in this moment

Unappreciated

Limited experience, sensory shutdown

The world fades

Feelings melt away

Soon evaporated

Enveloped in numbness

Unaffected

Prayers of the Misguided

“Dear God please,

Grant me reprieve”

The naive and misguided

Request of a depressive mind

“Give me chaos,

Give me strength”

Clueless manifestations

Of a curse disguised as a blessing

“Free me from darkness,

Fling me into the sun”

Dreams of soaring too high

No regard for skin as it melts

“Wake me from slumber

Make me alert”

A foolish plea

To take away rest

“Help me fly,

Offer me freedom”

A gift even the universe

Cannot afford to give

Lost Socks

Spotting a soggy sock on the edge of the road

Beg the question: who was she?

Once enveloping, warm

Now cold and grimy

An article of clothing past recognition

Purpose spent, left to rot

Who was she?

A loyal friend tossed aside?

A novel relationship run its course?

Can’t help but see myself in the discarded

Set aside, lost, and forgotten

Who are we then if not kin with the inanimate?

Just lost socks

Who were we?
